Personalized Emergency Plan
All students, faculty, and staff are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the emergency information for their work areas, classrooms, and living areas.
If you are an individual with a disability and may require assistance in the event of an emergency – e.g., a hurricane evacuation, fire drill, active shooter drill, or hazardous waste or toxin exposure – please contact your Building Manager, Department Safety Representative or the Office for Campus Accessibility (adaaccess@tulane.edu; 504-247-1774).
Self-identification as an individual with a disability is voluntary but please be prepared to address the purpose for requesting assistance and what your request is (e.g., an individual with a hearing impairment confirming if there are visual alerts for a fire evacuation in their building; an individual utilizing a scooter inquiring about the location of the emergency access route in their building.) Consider the following situations when determining to request assistance:
- Limitations that interfere with walking or using stairs
- Reduced stamina, fatigue, or tire easily
- Emotional, cognitive, or psychiatric impairments
- Vision or hearing loss
- Temporary limitations (surgery, pregnancy)
After participating in a drill or evacuation, provide feedback to the Office for Campus Accessibility about modifying or requesting additional accommodations. The Office for Campus Accessibility will coordinate with the Designated Safety Rep and the Building Manager to accommodate the individual with a disability. Please note that the Office for Campus Accessibility will only share enough information about the individual to the extent necessary to make accommodations.
If you invite visitors to campus, you are responsible for ensuring the visitors understand Tulane’s Emergency Information.

Locate Accessible Routes In Each Facility
For each building or facility that you frequent on campus, identify the designated areas of refuge and accessible means of egress in the event of an emergency. Do not plan to use an elevator in the event of an emergency.
For individuals utilizing a wheelchair or with mobility impairments who are unable to evacuate via the stairwell or other means of egress, locate the building’s designated area of refuge. In the event of an emergency evacuation, go to the area of refuge, contact TUPD, state name & building & where the area of refuge is within the building.
Only trained professionals from NOFD should evacuate individuals.
Out-Of-Town Evacuation
Create a personalized emergency evacuation plan, including identifying and securing accessible transportation that supports your disability before the evacuation or using city-assisted evacuation if you cannot evacuate on your own.
Ensure sufficient supplies to last for up to three days, including food, water, backup power supply, and medication.
