Digital Accessibility

Digital technology—the tools, systems, and devices used to work, communicate, and manage our day-to-day lives — has made life more comfortable. It was also supposed to blur the lines of race, gender, age, and ability, but technology has more work to do to become truly inclusive. Consider the issue of accessible technology for those with disabilities.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) focuses on improving accessibility for these individuals. While integrating technology accessibility into IT is a legal requirement, more importantly, providing equal access for all is the right thing to do. And with millions worldwide under stay-at-home orders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that those with disabilities have equal access to the technologies that help us work and communicate is imperative.

Digital Accessibility Statement for Tulane University

Tulane University is committed to ensuring that individuals with disabilities have equal access to all services and content provided by the university. This commitment extends to information technology (IT) and encompasses IT resources that Tulane University procures, develops, maintains, and uses. IT services and content, including but not limited to websites, software systems, electronic documents, videos, and digital course content, should offer substantially similar functionality, experience, and information access to people with disabilities as to those without disabilities.

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. Tulane University is currently striving to attain WCAG 2.1 level AA.
